Inside Outreach began in 1995 in response to letters from prisoners in the UK. At that time Derek’s radio programmes were being aired by UCB (United Christian Broadcasters) radio station. It transpired that many inmates were regularly tuning in, in their cells and increasingly we received encouraging feedback and appeals for free teaching materials.

God inspired us to begin a free resources programme, especially for inmates. Initially we selected thirty titles, a mixture of books and audio- tapes (since superseded by CD’s), from our full resource guide and we devised a points ordering system, which is still being used today. Each prisoner is allowed materials up to the value of 3 points every month; this can include CDs, books or a mixture of both. Each CD is worth 1 point and books vary according to their price. Points may be carried forward to save up for a set of CDs or a more expensive book.

A fresh selection is made annually, to broaden inmates’ Bible knowledge and to keep their interest. In 2006 we supplied over 1,700 free resources. Click here to view or download the current resource guide and order form.

Inmates

Inmates from 32 prisons receive materials from us regularly. Feedback is excellent, and many testify to how the teaching is challenging and changing them. We have been particularly blessed by one inmate who donated £100 and three others who send us contributions from their wages every month.

Chaplains

As Inside Outreach began to expand (by word of mouth) when inmates were transferred to other prisons, we started to receive requests from prison chaplains asking for materials to help stock their lending libraries. We have been able to meet these requests and since December 2006 alone we have supplied 40 chaplains with the entire 2007 selection. Click here to read comments and feedback from chaplains.

Foreign Resources

With increasing numbers of foreign nationals in our prisons and immigration removal centres, we have been able to fulfil a need in providing solid Christian teaching in other languages. These are always gratefully received. Derek's resources have been translated into more than 60 languages.

Ex-Offenders

It is always encouraging to receive positive feedback from prisoners and even more so when some write and ask if they can remain on the programme after their release. It is often a difficult time when man and women regain their freedom; the temptation to return to a former lifestyle makes them very vulnerable.  We are pleased to be able to supply a little continuity with spiritual food through Inside Outreach. How To Get Involved

With over 80,000 men and women currently in prison in England and Wales, there is great potential to Reach The Unreached And Teach The Untaught.  If you have contact with a secure establishment and would like to introduce Inside Outreach, please contact us for more information at enquiries@dpmuk.org ; alternatively you may download a Poster, Resource Guide and an Order Form here.

Prayer Points

  • Pray for chaplaincy teams throughout the UK, many of whom work excessive hours with insufficient resources
  • Pray for the men and women in custody who need a relationship with Jesus to change their offending behaviour
  • Pray for Governors and Officers especially those who are Christians
  • Pray for Inside Outreach to expand. If you would like to help us Reach the unreached and teach the untaught through Inside Outreach, please consider making a donation.
