I had the privilege of ministering with Derek a number of times in his last years. I soon discovered his amazing love and compassion for God’s people and his deep desire to see the Church of God as Christ intended. This book contains the cry of his heart for the church to be restored, to be the bride of whom the New Testament speaks so tenderly. Beginning with the seven pictures of the church from Ephesians – assembly, workmanship, family, temple, bride, army and body of Christ – he leads us on to look at what the local and trans-local church should and shouldn’t be.
Shattering a few modern myths along the way, Derek then takes the reader through the ‘mobile ministries’ of apostles, prophets, evangelists and teachers, before laying out what the Bible reveals about the ‘resident ministries’ of pastors and deacons and the daily life of the local church.
Derek once said: ‘At the present time, we manifest to the world a pathetically small part of the totality of Jesus Christ. Until the Church of Jesus Christ demonstrates Christ in all his fullness – in every aspect, every grace, every gift, every ministry – the church is not fulfilling its calling.’ If you’re looking for a book to reinforce your prejudices this isn’t it, but if you’re desperate enough to really want to see the church as God intended then read it and buy copies for all your friends – it will change your view of church forever.

Rediscovering God’s Church is among the most challenging teaching I have read from Derek Prince. He deals with issues so steeped in tradition that everyone has a picture of which they think church is or should be, but few of us have any idea of what God’s view of the Church is. Like a skilled artisan working to restore an old painting, he removes the layers of presumption and tradition to reveal the beauty and the glory of the Church as God intends her to be. Starting with God’s Vision for the Church, he then moves through the Seven Pictures of the Church as found in Ephesians and on to Structure, Leadership and Lifestyle of the Church before climaxing in the Future of the Church.
As I read, I wonder if the portrait of the Church as found in Scripture is ever possible. But then, I believe that God doesn’t ask the impossible of His people. From us, He requires what is possible and then He does the impossible by His Word and His Spirit as we, the Bride of Christ, make ourselves ready. This book shows a rare glimpse of the love relationship which Jesus is building with His people, but in addition to that, it painstakingly goes through every practical detail of a working church as revealed in the New Testament.
As Derek Prince says, Jesus is no bigamist, He is returning to be united with one bride, not one from each denomination. Thus we need to be teachable, discerning and attentive to His voice that we may not miss all that He is doing in and through His people as He draws this age to a close. As you read this, prepare to be challenged in your thinking on the Church, but also wonderfully encouraged and engendered with a deep sense of peace and hope that He is coming back. We, as His people, must pray that we may move forward into this calling and purpose which God has ordained for all those who believe – to be a special treasure, His own possession who will bring Him much glory.
I would recommend Rediscovering God’s Church to everyone who is dissatisfied with things as they are in the church as a whole today and who long to see the bigger picture and God’s purposes fulfilled in His people. May the Lord strengthen each of us as we seek to take our part in the building up of His body, the Church.
