Devotional: God Has Made Himself Available
I will bow down toward your holy temple and will praise your name for your love and your faithfulness,
for you have exalted above all things your name and your word.
Here is a marvellous example of God’s consideration and compassion for us. He is a great God, a mighty God, the Creator. We can see His wisdom and His power manifested in countless different aspects of creation. The heavens declare His glory; the oceans manifest His power; the mountains reveal His strength; the snowflakes illustrate His wisdom. All these marvels of creation demonstrate to us God’s greatness. But there is one thing they cannot do: They cannot make God available to us.
Outside of the realm of nature, however, there are two other ways that God reveals Himself: His name and His Word. These He has exalted above all the demonstrations of His greatness provided by creation. It is for our sakes He has done this, because through His name and His Word He does for us what creation cannot do: He makes Himself available to us.
God’s Word opens to us those intimate aspects of His personality that nature cannot reveal. It tells us how we may receive His mercy and favour. It unfolds all that He has promised to do for us.
God’s name, in turn, makes all those promises available to us. We cannot come to God on the basis of creation’s marvels, but we can come to Him on the basis of the promises of His Word—and all these are made available to us in the name of His Son, Jesus Christ. “I tell you the truth, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name” (John 16:23).
Thank You, Lord, for making Yourself available to me through Your Word and Your name.
