Mongolia is known as the "Land of the Eternal Blue Sky" or "Country of Blue Sky" because it has over 250 sunny days a year. However, the annual average temperature in the capital, Ulaanbaatar, is −1.3 °C, and it therefore shares the rank of the world's coldest city, with Moscow, Ottawa, and Nur-Sultan.
According to the 2010 National Census, among Mongolians aged 15 and above, 53% were Buddhists, while 39% were non-religious. Islam is the dominant religion among ethnic Kazakhs. Mongolian shamanism has been widely practised throughout history and continues to be practised as well.
However, Christianity is growing in Mongolia. According to the Christian missionary group Barnabas Fund, the number of Christians grew from just four in 1989 to around 40,000 as of 2008.
